The absolute minimum information you need in a BOM are a RefDes and a Description column.

When your customer sends only a descriptive list you must add in a spreadsheet program an additional column with fake RefDeses (e.g. A1, A2, A3, etc, etc). After importing the BOM in BOMArchitect you can scrub the BOM and learn the AML, based on the description only, which internal part codes are linked to the descriptions.
